Garden Route South Africa Self Drive Guide

1 min read ยท

The Garden Route stretches roughly three hundred kilometers along South Africa’s southern coast between Mossel Bay and Storms River, and it is one of the easiest and most rewarding self-drive routes in the world. The planning is straightforward because the road is good, the distances are short, and the stops are well marked, which leaves the driver free to enjoy the scenery rather than fight the logistics. The classic drive takes three to five days, and the must-stop points string together naturally. Knysna offers the lagoon and the Heads, Plettenberg Bay the beaches, and the Tsitsikamma section delivers the dramatic coastal forest with its suspension bridges and the Storms River mouth. Inland detours to the ostrich farms of Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves add a completely different landscape, and the whole route works in either direction. The practical notes are minor but worth knowing.

The N2 highway is well maintained, so a standard car is fine, and fuel, food, and accommodation are plentiful, though the popular towns book out in the December and January high season.
